Despite an early bus departure, rain and a muddy course the NHS Cross Country Team represented Newnan well at the Atlanta Classic early Saturday morning. The meet was held at Clinton Farms in Villa Rica.
The five kilometer race was a double loop. The majority of the race took place in the woods. Three hay bale jumps made the course a little more exciting for spectators.
The Varsity Girls ran against a competitive field of 14 teams. The rain picked up right as the race began resulting in a slippery and muddy wooded course. The girls did not let the rain stop them.
Mary Douglass Hallman lead the girls with a 21:24. Caroline Thomas followed Hallman with a 23:08 finishing time. Next Mallory Greene and Julia Sanders finished closely with a 24:09 and 24:15 respectively. Gabby Freeman rounded out the top five with a 24:29. Emily Flournoy and Sydney Hall were the final two for the Girls Varsity team with times of 25:05 and 25:17.
The Varsity Boys also ran in a very competitive race of 18 teams. Enrique Inostroza lead the Varsity Boys to the finish with a 18:53 minute finish. Sam Coody followed Inostroza with a time of 19:43. Ninth grader Will Thomas was the next NHS runner finishing at 19:53. Ryan Cost finished third at 20:17. Eli Moore and Patrick Boren raced each other to the finish with times of 20:33 and 20:34.
The JV Girls race kicked the meet into action. The JV Girls competed against three other teams. The JV Girls were led by senior Emma Morris, 26:22, freshman Elizabeth Woodham, 27:16, Darby Cook, 27:32, Paige Batten, 27:57, Sisdel Bach, 27:53, Caroline Ferguson, 32:53, Mckenzie Synder,33:36, and Joyce Fowler, 33:40.
The JV Boys raced against six other teams. Donovan James placed 12th with a time of 20:27. Jackson Neely, 20:40, was the next finisher followed by Andrew Lewis, 21:01, Riley Fowler, 21:29, Jake Johnston, 21:30, Drew Garcia,21:56, Garret Blackstock, 21:57, Andrew Bates, 21:59, Spencer Matthews,22:09, Ben Wagner, 22:37, Houston Carter, 23:46, and Nathan Rayburn, 24:29.
The Cross Country team will continue to represent the cougar nation throughout their remaining four meets. Next week the team will travel to Strong Rock Christian School in Locust Grove for the Strong Rock Invitational. Newnan will have a by week then compete in the County Cup at Northgate High School.
Newnan will host the Region Championship at Newnan Utilities Park on October 31st.
