This Year’s Prom Will Be Held At The Foundry in Atlanta

Ladies, find the perfect dress. Gentlemen, get your tux ready. It’s that time of year again, prom is upon us!

In past years, Newnan’s prom has taken place at Club Opera and The Tabernacle, but this May, the Cougars will be taking on a new venue. Newnan High School’s prom will be held on May 14 from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. at The Foundry at Puritan Mill in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Foundry at Puritan Mill was built in 1921 and operated by Puritan Chemical Company. The building was originally a storage facility for Puritan soap and other cleaning products. It also served as the Atlanta headquarters until 1996. In 2000, the location was restored and converted into a multi-use facility. The Foundry’s 12,000 square foot facility has been host to formal weddings, social events and, more recently, high school proms.

Leading up to the big day, students and their guests must complete a short list of requirements to be able to attend. First and foremost, every single person planning to attend must fill out a code of conduct form, promising to be in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing. Forms can be found outside Ms. Aaron’s room (108) and should be turned in to her as well.

Students must also turn in fees along with their forms. Prom fees are now $65 per student and $50 per date. The code of conduct form and payment must be turned in at the same time by May 6. Payments are nonrefundable and will not be accepted at the door.

All attendees will need to arrange rides to and from the venue. Many students group up and pitch in for a bus to drive them there. Others split the price of a limousine. For those who choose to drive themselves, The Foundry offers a 250 car parking lot.

The best way to get to The Foundry from Newnan is to go down I-85 and take exit 247. Keep left until I-20 leads to exit 55A. Take that exit and continue straight onto Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard. The Foundry is located at 916 Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard.

When students arrive at the location, they must present a photo ID at the door to be admitted. The venue will have snacks and drinks for students but most will choose to eat beforehand since the prom runs late in the evening.

Newnan High will provide student resource officers (SRO) as security, and City of Atlanta police officers will also be assigned to the venue.

Perhaps one of the most exciting parts of attending the prom is choosing what to wear. There are many things that go into creating the perfect prom look.

For girls, it is the dress that takes the spotlight. Formal dresses can be found at department stores like Dillards and Belk. Peachtree City has more specialized stores for formal wear like Posh Prom, Formal Wear and J. Andrews Bridal and Formal. J. Andrews also rents tuxedos, but Newnan has its very own C.S. toggery and Men’s Warehouse that have large selections for boys attending the prom.

Though Newnan’s prom does not have a dress code, there have been past instances requiring pinning to avoid wardrobe malfunctions at the dance. Mrs. Aaron suggests following the rule “if you have to ask, it’s probably not acceptable.”

Corsages and boutonnieres to give to dates can be purchased at Murphey Florist in downtown Newnan, Flowers by Freddie Florist on Franklin Street or Kroger on Bullsboro Drive. Flowers should be picked up the day of prom and put in a refrigerator or cold container to keep them looking fresh.

Mrs. Aaron and Mrs. Finger will be in the lobby of Newnan High School on May 4th and 5th for students to pick up their tickets. They will have more information available for students and will be able to answer any questions.
