The Lady Cougars won the Sweet Sixteen playoff game against Etowah High School Tuesday night at Newnan. The teams played with extreme intensity and constantly exchanged momentum throughout all five sets.
The first set began with Newnan closing in on winning the set until the Etowah Eagles came back and snatched the set from the Cougars at the very end.
The Eagles and the Cougars were both competitively matched.
The second set was close. Both schools fought to close the set as a win. Etowah received the final point when they hit a ball that was touched by a Cougar player on the way out of bounds.
Etowah had a 2-0 lead against the Cougars going into intermission. Both teams went to their locker rooms and came out prepared for the final stretch.
The crowd throughout the match was loud and cheered the teams on. Newnan’s student section and band assisted with the serious crowd engagement in the match and intense mood in the gym.
The Lady Cougars had to win the third set to prevent Etowah from winning the match.
The third set was won by the Cougars and their comeback began. They were now 2-1 and needed two more set wins to close the series.
Newnan continued to play competitively and won the fourth set. They evened the count at 2-2 and pushed into the final set. In the final set, the first team to get 15 points would win the match and move on to the Elite Eight. The stakes were high.
The Cougars began the fifth set with strong momentum and posted 15 points before the Eagles.
The crowd went wild and continued to cheer for the Cougars as they ran onto the court after the match was over.
Coach Krista Wilson, NHS Head Volleyball Coach, stated, “I am so proud of my team for the hard work and the dedication they put into the match. Their resilience really shows the heart that my girls have and their love of volleyball.”
For the first time the Cougars are now on their way to the Elite Eight match against Walton High School on Saturday, October 22, 2016.
Olivia Masonheimer, NHS senior and Volleyball Co-Captain, remarked on her excitement to lead the team into the Elite Eight match and further matches.
“I’m proud of my teammates and glad we have made history at Newnan High School during my senior year as a Newnan Cougar,” she said.
The Lady Cougars, along with students, faculty and parents are excited to see the accomplishments and success of the Newnan Volleyball team.
