The Newnan High School girls golf team won the 18 hole Area Tournament at Marietta City Club on Monday, April 24th. This is the second Area win and the first time that the girls program has been able to move onto the state tournament.

The team won their region in 2014 and has been building their team since then.

The players for this competition consisted of Courtney Lewis, Mackenzie Teal, Mason Kendrick and Allie Oliver.

All players played a good round, receiving scores of 78 for Courtney, 105 for Mackenzie, 106 for Mason and 114 for Allie.

Mackenzie Teal, a senior golfer on the NHS golf team, explained, “It was a very positive experience.” She continued to say, “The coaches from other schools, as well as our own coaches, were very supportive and encouraging throughout the tournament.”

The positive environment from the coaches and the golfers playing with her helped to create a relaxing day and a fun round of golf.

The qualifying score for state is a 300 and the girls qualified with a score of 289.

Coach King, a community coach for the NHS golf team, said, “My girls have worked hard and for them to pull out a win says a lot about their dedication to our program.”

The team is expecting a strong outcome from the state tournament which will be held on Monday, May 22nd and Tuesday, May 23rd.

Coach King stated, “As for state, my team knows we take one shot at a time and everything else will fall into place.”

He is constantly encouraging them to do their personal best and the outcome of the scores will be positive.

Courtney Lewis, NHS senior golfer, commented,”I think going to state as a team is an awesome opportunity for all of us to not only play a really good two day tournament, but it will also be a good bonding experience for the team to play some fun practice rounds and all stay in a hotel together and just have a good time.”

Courtney has participated in the state tournament since her freshman year and it is exciting that she will be accompanied by the rest of the team to compete for a team win.

Coach King continued to state, “I am so proud of my entire team for all the hard work they put in on a daily basis.”
